Abel Heywood was the prime mover in the formation of the MAA and became its first secretary.  He was a publisher and the son of a famous father, Abel Heywood senior, a leading Manchester Chartist who was imprisoned for his activities, but later became Lord Mayor of Manchester.  There is a statue of A H senior in the central square and a bust in the Town Hall.
